Gun Safety
In the wake of two recent shootings, we decided to take a closer look at gun safety. Wildlife officers say there's no law in Tennessee saying guns must be locked up in your home.
On Saturday evening, a twelve year old boy walked into a family reunion at a home on Camp Road. The boy found a handgun and accidentally shot himself in the stomach. He remains in the hospital, but is reportedly doing fine.
Later the same night, two teenage boys were playing with a gun in the street and one was shot in the thigh. He is also recovering in the hospital.
So, while everyone we spoke to agrees that guns can be dangerous weapons ESPECIALLY around children, but the question remains, what's the best way to keep incidents like this from happening?
Dawn Scheaffer owns Montlake Classic Clay Gun Stop. She says she keeps guns in her home out and unlocked even around her three children. She says she is never worried about her kids using the weapons because she taught them gun safety at an early age.
Schaeffer says you can't always blame the parents. Some kids are just curious, which is why gun safety lessons and classes are so important. She says, "The more you teach you kids about guns, the better. They need to understand how dangerous the firearms are, so that they are not as curious. This way they won't be tempted to handle one or touch one.
We also spoke with the T.W.R.A. about gun safety tips, and they tell us the most important thing is to teach your children that guns are not toys but dangerous weapons. They also suggest keeping your firearms and your ammunition locked up in different locations.
